Relieving the Northern Lebanese Mediterranean Sea coast from abandoned nylon fishnets

The Lebanese coast and sea are polluted by all kinds of plastic waste. Among the pollutants found on the Lebanese coast are the remains of nylon fishnets. This topic is not treated by any of the organizations working in Lebanon.

This initiative aims at raising fishermen awareness on the negative impacts of nylon fishnets left at sea. Meanwhile, actions to collect and recycle abandoned fishnets will be implemented.

Results :

  • Organisation of 5 awareness-raising workshops for 100 fishermen on the dangers of ghost nets for flora and fauna.
  • Distribution of fishing net repair kits.
  • Deployment of wooden containers in ports to collect used nets, with weekly collection and cleaning of the nets.
  • Purchase of a machine to shred the nets. The shredded nylon is then sent to a recycling plant.
