Plastic Mediterranean:
Beyond the observation,
what solutions ?

One year after the launch of the « Beyond Plastic Med » initiative, five organizations (IUCN, Tara Expeditions, Surfrider, the Mava Foundation and the Albert II of Monaco Foundation) join forces to create an international plateform, dedicated to research and implementation of solutions against plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea. This taskforce aims at bringing together the private sector, civil society, political and regional initiatives in a global cooperation network. To this effect, the BeMed Plateform carries a « call to action » open to all mediterranean countries. It will support and encourage environmental conservation projects and thus launch the process of restoring and protecting the Mediterranean Sea. Simultaneously, a private sector workshop will bring together the industries involved in the plastic chain of production and work to implement tomorrow’s solution. The Mediterranean and its 450 millions inhabitants spread across 22 countries represent an incredible potential to be mobilized !

The call for micro-initiatives - June 8 2016

The 8th of June is the Internation Ocean Day. On this occasion, the Beyond Plastic Med call for projects will be launched. It aims at creating ultimately a large network of micro-initiatives involving all Mediterranean countries. We will financially support local field projects designed to reduce plastic pollution and ultimately create a Mediterranean network of NGOs, collectivities and enterprises working together on a local level.

Save the date : may 9th & 10th 2016 - IUCN Workshop

The Beyond Plastic Med Taskforce believes that all actors, and especially the private sector, must join forces to preserve the health of the Mediterranean Sea. In collaboration with the IUCN, the BeMed Taskforce will organise on May 9th and 10th a workshop involving various actors of the private sector on the problematic of plastic. A similar workshop held in November 2015 showed promising results. The goal for participating firms, producers and industries is to think together about solutions for limiting plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.

Where does BeMed come from : The conference in mars 2015

On March 10th 2015, an international conference organised by Beyond Plastic Med took place in Monaco in the presence of the Ségolène Royal, French Minister for Ecology and H.S.H the Prince Albert II. Organised by a group comprising the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Mava Foundation, Tara Expéditions and Surfrider Foundation Europe, it aimed to bring together the main stakeholders in the plastics industry (industry figures, local government representatives, scientists, civil society figures), not just to establish an assessment of the current situation, but also - and more importantly - to commit to practical actions to help our environment and counter the impact of proliferating plastic waste in the Mediterranean.
