This project promotes a shift in consumption patterns in Alexandria’s Mid-City district by testing a deposit-return system for reusable glasses and containers in bars and takeaway restaurants, which rewards users of the deposit scheme.
“With the ECORIS project, our ambition is to transform Alexandria’s iconic Mid-City coast into a model ofsustainability by demonstrating that a circular, single-use plastic-free economy can be bothenvironmentally impactful and economically viable.
Through the ‘Alexandria Coastal Loop,’ customers use reusable cups and containers with a simpledeposit-return system: they pay a small refundable deposit and can return the item at any of our 20partner establishments to recover it and receive a loyalty token.
What makes this initiative especially innovative is its digital-free, community-based approach, designedspecifically for the local Egyptian context, making circular solutions accessible to everyone withoutrelying on apps or technology barriers. Beyond aiming for at least a 20% reduction in single-use plasticconsumption in the pilot area, the project will also empower 50 local young people with scientificmonitoring skills and help develop a roadmap for long-term plastic reduction policies across Alexandria.” Sally Elkhodary, Co-Founder & Director of Ecoris.
