DECLIC – Diagnosis and sustainability of shellfish farming practices in the Mediterranean: The case of mICroplastics

UMR MARBEC

The aim of this scientific project was to estimate the contribution of shellfish farming to microplastic pollution in the Thau lagoon and to produce recommendations to ensure the sustainability of this practice and reduce its impact.

For one year, the association carried out monthly monitoring of microplastics present in the water column, sediments and bivalves. The samples taken in 2011 enabled a comparison to be made with the state of pollution in 2021.

Main results of the project:

  • Environmental monitoring: Monthly sampling for 12 months at three stations.
  • Material analysis: Only nets and ropes used in aquaculture appear to contribute to microplastic pollution.
  • Field visits: Sampling and chemical identification of materials used in shellfish farms.
  • Communication: Creation of a dedicated website, production of several films by students, in collaboration with the project’s scientific team.
