A Euro-Mediterranean network committed to a plastic-free Mediterranean
This project aimed to train stakeholders who are members of the Euro-Mediterranean network (23 countries around the Mediterranean) in the “Clean Up the Med” marine litter sampling method, with the aim of carrying out a joint audit of beaches around the Mediterranean.
- Beach clean-up: Collections were carried out using the “Clean Up the Med” method, and showed a large amount of plastic and cigarette butts, particularly near the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The data was entered and documented for better use.
- Raising awareness: Events were organized to raise awareness about the reduction of single-use plastics, with a variety of activities such as the creation of an artistic mural and microplastics observations. An exhibition was created for the Fête de la Science and was reproduced for other events.
- Training and Mediterranean collaboration: The project trained Mediterranean establishments in cleaning methodology and organized a joint marine litter collection during the Mediterranean month of waste collection.
