Actions to preserve the environment along the south Lebanese sea coast

Alissar Liban

The initiative “Actions to preserve the environment along the maritime coast of South Lebanon” carried by Alissar Lebanon has as main objective to raise awareness among schools, communities and companies in the region of Tyr about the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

Indeed, the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) contribute greatly to sustainable development and allow to reach the “zero waste” objective. Reducing waste conserves valuable resources and helps reduce waste collection and treatment. The use of reuse can also make a significant contribution to waste reduction, material conservation, cost reduction and environmental protection. Finally, recycling in all its forms also conserves materials and energy, reduces the amount of material going to landfills, contributes to the economy, creates jobs and protects the environment.

Key results:

  • Collection of 4,500 kg of sorted waste (including 1,145 kg of plastic) thanks to the participation of three local authorities.
  • Installation of 55 recycling bins in schools and businesses.
  • 27 waste exchange stands offering vouchers, involving 1,334 people and managing 11,767 kg of solid waste (4,120 kg of plastic).
  • 3 beach clean-up campaigns involving 200 participants and collecting 2,086 kg of sorted waste.
  • Training and awareness-raising: 20 schools, 15 businesses and 3 municipalities trained in the 3Rs, with the adoption of sorting centres and sustainable practices.
  • Purchase of a vehicle to improve waste collection and transport to the Feker wa Insan recycling centre.
