Cruise ships against plastic pollution in the Med
As part of this initiative supported by the Cypriot Ministry of Shipping, ISOTECH Ltd has strengthened the capacity and supported stakeholders in the maritime transport sector to reduce plastic waste generation, with a focus on single-use plastics produced by ships. The initiative has encouraged the implementation of effective waste management practices on cruise ships and in ports.
Main results of the project:
- Collection and analysis of data on single-use plastics on board cruise ships, including on a 7-day cruise in the Mediterranean.
- Identification of 62 key stakeholders and organisation of a workshop in 2021 with 24 stakeholders to define needs and solutions, resulting in an action plan for Cypriot decision-makers.
- Creation of a guide to best practices for reducing single-use plastics on ships, distributed to more than 200 professionals.
- Presentation of results at the ‘Thalassa 2021’ event with public awareness-raising and high media visibility.
