Marine litter prevention in Sazani and Kune Vain Islands

Milieukontakt Albania (MiA) & Environmental and Territorial Management Institute (ETMI)

This project aims to reduce plastic pollution on the islands of Sazani and Kune Vain by mobilising local communities, monitoring marine litter and supporting economic stakeholders in adopting more sustainable practices. To this end, Communities of Practice (CoPs) will be created to bring together residents, businesses and authorities around a common roadmap. These groups will map pollution sources and regularly monitor waste on beaches using a participatory science approach. At the same time, around 100 businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, will receive support to reduce their use of single-use plastics (SUPs) and adopt reusable or biodegradable alternatives, with a target of 500 kg of plastic avoided. The project also includes awareness-raising activities for the general public, including collective clean-ups, local events and communication campaigns, in order to raise awareness and encourage responsible behaviour. Finally, the results obtained will feed into broader initiatives across the Mediterranean.
