Montenegro’s new Law on Waste Management, effective October 2024, bans plastic bags and single-use plastics, marking a key step toward environmental sustainability. However, low public awareness of waste disposal and recycling remains a major challenge, making effective waste management essential to protect public health and natural resources.

This project addresses environmental pollution in Montenegro, worsened by a drop in tourism and poor waste management. The neglected Gracanica River, which flows into the Mediterranean, is a key focus.

Actions include:

  • A local survey linking waste practices to health and quality of life,
  • Seven cleanup events with plastic waste analysis,
  • Awareness campaigns targeting the public, businesses, and decision-makers,
  • Advocacy for stronger waste laws and national recognition of Gracanica’s ecological importance.

The goal is to drive systemic change and promote responsible waste management across Montenegro.
