Plastics Health Risks Environment

Club des Activités de Plongée de Bizerte

The aim of the initiative led by the Bizerte Diving Club was to reduce plastic waste pollution on the beaches and coastline of the Bizerte region in Tunisia, in particular by raising awareness among the population of its harmful effects on health and the seabed, and to organise waste collection and clean-up activities.

To this end, schoolchildren, high school students and students from the Faculty of Sciences of Bizerte and the Higher Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Bizerte, who are the target audience of the initiative, surveyed the seabed to identify pollution.

Main results:

  • Raising awareness among young people: organisation of beach and seabed observation trips, distribution of documentaries and data collection tools, exchange workshops with students, creation of communication materials and an educational kit.
  • Raising awareness among the general public and field actions: beach campaigns with an information tent and fun activities, underwater clean-up operations with divers, identification of plastics in collaboration with the INSTM.
  • Communication and visibility: production of tools (banners, etc.) and creation of a dedicated Facebook page.

The BeMed community has facilitated useful contacts, notably with the Centre de Découverte Mer et Montagne (CDMM) and Nature Dive in France. The continuity of the project is ensured thanks to the numerous partnerships that have been developed. In addition, a new scientific project on the state of health of coastal sites has been launched, using the diving equipment that has been acquired.
