The River OSPAR guide, developed by Surfrider Foundation Europe, presents a standardised five-step protocol for measuring and categorising river waste: understanding the context, finding the ideal site, preparing before you start, collecting and sorting the waste collected. Inspired by experience gained since 2010 as part of the OSPAR coastal monitoring network, it aims to improve understanding of river pollution, a major source of marine litter. Carried by winds and currents, much of this litter accumulates on riverbanks and remains there for long periods. Data collection makes it possible to assess the quantity, nature and distribution of waste, set reduction targets, guide local action, strengthen European advocacy and analyse the effectiveness of the measures implemented. Integrated into the BeMed+ programme, this project relies on participatory science and the commitment of volunteers, who are essential for building an ambitious and collaborative monitoring network.
