Save Sea Initiative

In Algeria, 60 to 80% of plastic waste produced ends up in the sea (of which only 10% is recycled). These statistics show the need to adopt new waste management procedures.

The first Algerian initiative supported by BeMed, Save Sea is carried by Leancubator, an incubator for startups and innovative projects. It aims to launch a program to support projects on 2 specific topics: reducing the use of plastic, and improving the collection, treatment and processing of plastic waste.

The project aimed to support innovative Algerian start-ups in the fight against plastic pollution through a capacity-building, networking and funding programme.

Main results:

  • Launch of a call for projects, which received 90 responses. Six start-ups were selected and supported through 10 workshops and a pitch day.
  • Sponsorship obtained from two Algerian ministries (Knowledge Economy and Environment).
  • Mobilisation of more than 20 experts and 339 participants during the activities.
  • Meeting between start-ups and the Algerian Start-up Fund and the Blue Economy Programme.
  • Publication of a final report presenting the initiative and the six projects supported.
