Social inclusion for clean, sustainable and plastic waste free cities

More than 25 000 tons of plastic waste are produced each year in Tunisia of which only 25% are collected (source ANGED). The tourist attractiveness of Tunisia generates strong variation in the quantity of waste produced and cause an intense pressure on the environment and its natural resources.

Supported by Green ALAFCO, this project aims to improve the plastic waste collection system by using informal collectors whilst improving their working conditions and their social and financial integration.

A coaching plan will be proposed to the informal collectors in order to facilitate interactions with households and restaurants during collection. The project also foresees the installation of collection bins at strategic locations to facilitate the weighing and storage of the waste.  With this method, each collector will be able to target approximately 50 households/restaurants per day. ALAFCO anticipates a daily collection of about 4 tons of plastic (carried out by about 30 collectors in the first year), which is three times the current volume.
