Towards Zero Plastic in Menorca

Go Zero Waste & Plastic Free Menorca

The Balearic Islands, in particular the island of Menorca, is one of the most important coastal tourist destinations in Europe and around the Mediterranean and has been labeled a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This region is very dependent on tourism which represents about 40% of its economy.

In this context, Plastic Free Menorca has partnered with Go Zero Waste to create a mobile app offering a series of challenges to encourage people to reduce their use of single-use plastics. It is aimed at both residents and tourists. Through its use, data on local habits will be collected and used to refine and personalise the experience.

The second edition of the Go Zero Waste Challenge in Menorca engages citizens in reducing single-use plastics (SUPs) through a fun app and local awareness-raising activities.

Main results:

  • 38,235 people reached on social media, 156 challenges completed, 179 plastic items avoided, 5 press or web articles published.
  • Improvement of the app and completion of 30 SUP reduction challenges, with a photo verification system.
  • Organisation of zero-waste workshops and a beach clean-up involving 50 participants.
  • Creation of a collaborative map of committed businesses on the island.
  • Introduction of rewards in the form of experiences for the most assiduous participants.
