Towards Zero Plastic in Menorca, Go Zero Waste & Plastic Free Menorca

The Balearic Islands, in particular the island of Menorca, is one of the most important coastal tourist destinations in Europe and around the Mediterranean and has been labeled a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This region is very dependent on tourism which represents about 40% of its economy.

Plastic Free Menorca has joined forces with the startup Go Zero Waste to create an international mobile app where a series of challenges linked to rewards and incentive programs will have a direct impact on the prevention and reduction of single use plastics in Menorca. The app targets both locals and tourists and is aiming to educate, to prevent and reduce single use plastics. Data on local habits will also be collected with the app in order to propose a personalized gamification experience. Plastic Free Menorca will promote this app and showcase it during different events and meetings. In the long run, they hope to extend the project to other touristic regions in the Mediterranean.
