Plastic Free Beach

The initiative “Plastic Free Beach” is part of the « Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free » Project (also known as the KOSSPF Project), and it aims to implement actions that contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution in Cyprus. For this project to be successfully implemented, some mandatory actions need to be lead in order to provide the minimum facilities for the avoidance of unnecessary plastics.

The project aimed to train tourism businesses to reduce single-use plastics and raise public awareness on a pilot beach.

Main results:

Infrastructure put in place: A beach was designated ‘plastic-free’ and equipped with a water fountain, a designated smoking area and recycling bins to encourage good behaviour and improve waste management.
Public awareness: Communication was reinforced through a large explanatory sign, a work of art made from recycled plastic, and a launch event that included a beach clean-up to involve children, which attracted the interest of visitors.
Training for local businesses: Hotels in the area were supported in reducing single-use plastics and developed customised action plans, which also facilitated CSTI certification.

The overall project, ‘Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic Free – Destination Zero Plastic in Cyprus’, is continuing, with a growing number of beaches and municipalities joining the movement. Find out more: here.
