Plastic Free Beach

The initiative “Plastic Free Beach” is part of the « Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free » Project (also known as the KOSSPF Project), and it aims to implement actions that contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution in Cyprus. For this project to be successfully implemented, some mandatory actions need to be lead in order to provide the minimum facilities for the avoidance of unnecessary plastics :

  • The installation of a water station which provides filtered, cold, and free water to the beach users ;
  • The organization of a smoking area encouraging users to responsibly dispose of cigarette butts, which are the most commonly found pieces of beach litter worldwide;
  • Installation of recycling bins on the beach;
  • Installation of informative signs to encourage visitors to use the actions and be part of the solution not the problem ;
  • Creation of an artwork to sensitize visitors about plastic pollution
  • Organization of four staff trainings of the participating hotels and neighboring businesses to engage and inform them of the implemented actions to help increase the visitors’ awareness ;
  • Organization of specific meetings with the neighboring businesses to create specific action plans on how they can reduce the consumption of single-use plastic in their businesses, in order to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up on the beach.
