Welcome to the Monaco Department of the Environment!

We are delighted to welcome the Monaco Department of the Environment to the Business Club. For the first time, a public institution is joining the Club’s discussions to strengthen the dialogue and understanding of plastic-related issues.

The Department of the Environment is a key stakeholder within the Principality, as it is responsible, among other things, for:

  • helping to define and implement the Monegasque Government’s policy in the fields of sustainable development and the environment;
  • coordinating actions that contribute to a sustainable development approach within the Principality by building cross-cutting relationships with the various stakeholders involved;
  • monitoring sources of pollution;
  • participating, on behalf of the Principality and together with the Department of External Relations, in the work of international organizations, such as the negotiations on the international treaty against plastic pollution, for example.

Driven by the Department of the Environment, single-use plastic containers for takeaway sales are now banned in the Principality. This new step reinforces a series of progressive bans on single-use plastic products that were previously part of citizens’ daily lives.

The presence of the Department of the Environment within the Business Club strengthens the voice of civil society in the Club’s discussions, alongside businesses and scientists. It will also be able to draw inspiration from the actions implemented in the pilot projects in order to strengthen Monegasque regulations.
