Relieving the Northern Lebanese Mediterranean Sea Coast from plastic leftovers

Lebanese Developers

Lebanese Developers focuses on generating income and involving women in the Lebanese labour market in order to give them the opportunity to integrate through training and job opportunities.

With BeMed’s support, Lebanese Developers developed an initial project to raise awareness among fishermen in the Akkar region (and surrounding areas) and collect used fishing gear and gear drifting at sea. Experience showed that other plastic waste requiring treatment (shredding, transformation, etc.) was trapped in the drifting gear collected.

This second project, supported by BeMed, aimed to raise awareness among fishermen in the port of Abdeh about the environmental impact of used nets and other plastic waste, to organise their collection and to recycle them into granules.

Main results:

  • Organisation of four clean-up campaigns on the Akkar coast, with significant participation from local women, resulting in an environmental study showing that 70% of the waste collected was plastic and making recommendations for better management.
  • Awareness-raising among 100 fishermen during four sessions and distribution of 300 brochures adapted to the language and reading level of the public.
  • Installation of three collection boxes at the port, transport of waste to their premises, cleaning, crushing and preparation of 1,240 kg of plastic for pelletisation.
