Because of the high tourist influx and the absence of a local waste management strategy, the island of Djerba is today subject to significant plastic pollution. The PlastiStop project, led by the Jlij Association for the Marine Environment AJEM, aims to limit plastic leakage at sea by improving waste management on the island.
In partnership with the Municipality of Houmt Souk and the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED), selective sorting will be set up in a district of Mellita. After one year of adjusting the process with 100 families, and taking into account the specificities of each area, selective sorting will be extended. This system will be accompanied by the installation of several collection facilities in strategic points on the island (proximity of shops, busy beaches, port, etc.) and by a commitment from the population and tourists through numerous awareness-raising actions. To facilitate the appropriation of the project by the population, citizens will also be asked to clean and characterise the waste from the island’s beaches and to redevelop a highly polluted public space into an open recreational park.
To ensure the relevance of the actions carried out, the project will rely on the results of a study of the local context (major sources of pollution, main obstacles to the implementation of solutions, actors involved, quantification of pollution…) carried out beforehand.
With the support of BeMed, the association has already carried out 2 other projects : Plastistop and Plastistop II
