Because of the high tourist influx and the absence of a local waste management strategy, the island of Djerba is today subject to significant plastic pollution. The PlastiStop project, led by the Jlij Association for the Marine Environment (AJEM), aims to limit plastic leakage at sea by improving waste management on the island.
PlastiStop aimed to conduct a quantitative and qualitative study on the state of plastic pollution in Djerba in partnership with the island’s residents, plastic collectors, hotels, recycling companies, and public stakeholders.
With the support of BeMed, AJEM has already completed two previous projects, Plastistop I et Plastistop II, and continues to seek ways to improve and expand its current initiatives. By engaging the local population and tourists through awareness-raising actions and collaborative projects, AJEM aimed to create a sustainable waste management model for Djerba, which could be replicated in other coastal regions.
